The EU agreed to delay the AI Act’s high-risk deadlines. Do not plan as if it is law yet.

In short: the EU has agreed, but not yet finished adopting, a delay of the AI Act’s high-risk obligations to December 2, 2027 for stand-alone systems and August 2, 2028 for AI in regulated products. Until the Council adopts the text and it is published, August 2, 2026 remains the legal date. Prohibitions, general-purpose model duties and most transparency duties are not delayed.^1,2

On May 7, 2026 the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the “Digital Omnibus on AI,” a package of amendments to the EU AI Act. Parliament voted to adopt it on June 16. The Council still has to approve it formally, after which it will be published in the Official Journal and take effect three days later. Both institutions aim to finish before August 2, 2026, the date on which the current high-risk obligations would otherwise apply.¹ This briefing is educational, not legal advice.
