AIMO kit

AI Management Office kit: run AI like a managed function.

An AI Management Office (AIMO) is the function that owns an organization's AI portfolio: inventory, intake, policy, risk and compliance coordination, and reporting to leadership. Some organizations call it an AI center of excellence or an AI governance office. This kit gives you seven working documents to set one up and run it: the charter and strategy, a code of conduct, the governance framework, talent and adoption, project management, integration and performance tracking. Current to 2026, cited, and ready to complete.

What an AIMO does

Someone has to own the portfolio.

In McKinsey's 2026 survey nearly nine in ten respondents reported regular AI use, but only 37 percent said AI had contributed to their organization's EBIT, and only about 6 percent captured significant value. The difference between the few who capture value and the many who do not is mostly management: an owner, a policy, a process and a review.

  • Keeps the inventory. Every AI system, its owner, its data and its risk tier, including the tools people use without asking.
  • Runs intake. New use cases are scored for value, feasibility and risk before anyone buys or builds.
  • Holds the rules. A short policy, a code of conduct and the procedures behind them, mapped to the NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001.
  • Measures and reports. Quality, adoption, operations and business outcomes, on one page, every quarter.

AI governance framework template

The governance framework, on five pages.

Document three of the kit is an AI governance framework template you complete for your organization, built to line up with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO/IEC 42001.

  • A four-layer operating model: accountability, policy, process and review.
  • Decision rights: a RACI for approvals, purchases, exceptions and incidents.
  • Three risk tiers with the review each needs and how often.
  • A three-tier policy stack, from principles to procedures.
  • A gap map against the four NIST AI RMF functions and the nine ISO/IEC 42001 Annex A objectives.

Starting with policy only? Three sections of the AI policy template are free to read.

Questions

About the AIMO kit.

What is an AI Management Office?

The function that holds an organization's AI portfolio: it keeps the inventory of AI systems, runs intake, maintains the policies, coordinates risk and compliance work, and reports results to leadership. In a small organization it is one person with part of their week; in a large one it is a team.

Who is the kit for?

The person or team setting up AI governance and management for an organization: a newly appointed AI lead, a COO, CIO or CISO, a head of risk or compliance, or a transformation office. No technical background is required.

What format are the documents in?

PDF plus editable Word and Excel versions. Each of the seven documents comes as a branded PDF and as an editable Word file with the same headings, tables, checklists and sources. The six with fill-in tables (all but the Code of Conduct) also come as an Excel workbook: the portfolio and scoring grids, the RACI, the risk tiers and gap maps, the OWASP risk table, the checklists and the baseline register, with dropdowns where the document defines the values. They are designed to be completed in working sessions and adapted to your organization. Each lists the sources behind its facts and the date it was last reviewed.

How is it licensed?

For internal use by the purchasing organization. Share it freely inside your organization; do not resell or republish it.

How does it relate to the AIMP certification?

The AIMP toolkit helps one professional manage one AI system at a time. The AIMO kit sets up the office that manages all of them. Many organizations use both: AIMP for the people, the kit for the office.

Is this legal advice?

No. The documents are educational material. Have legal and security review anything that creates obligations for your organization.

Next step

Certify the people who will run it.

The AIMO kit sets up the office. The AIMP certification prepares the people in it, with certification seats at 10 to 20 percent off for teams of five or more.
