Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index: the organization, not the individual, decides AI impact

In short: Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index attributes two-thirds of the measured impact of AI at work to the organization (culture, manager support, talent practices) and one-third to the individual. The managers of its most advanced AI users use AI openly, set quality standards for AI-assisted work, make room for experiments and push for redesign. Those are things any manager can start this month.¹

Microsoft published its 2026 Work Trend Index on May 5. It is based on a survey of 20,000 knowledge workers who use AI at work, about 2,000 in each of ten markets, together with anonymized Microsoft 365 signals.¹ Its headline group is the “Frontier Professional”: a respondent who uses AI agents for complex, multi-step work, routinely redesigns workflows around what AI does well, and takes part in structured AI practices that can scale beyond one person. They made up 16 percent of respondents.¹
